Ontario knows how to put on a fall show. All of the fall foliage lights up in shades of yellow, orange, and red. But if you’ve never experienced the 1000 Islands as the leaves change colour, you’re missing out on a spectacular autumn road trip in Eastern Ontario. I recently explored Gananoque and the 1000 Islands to see the autumn hues, and I got to take this beautiful stretch of the St. Lawrence River from just about every angle imaginable.
I flew over the islands in a helicopter with 1000 Islands Helicopter Tours, cruised through Canadian and American waters on City Cruises, wandered the charming streets of downtown Gananoque, and watched an absolutely phenomenal production of Come From Away at the 1000 Islands Playhouse. And yes, I squeezed in coffee or two, a bookshop, a few art galleries, and a pretty spectacular sunset along the way.
Here’s why Gananoque deserves a spot on your Ontario fall getaway list, plus some things to do in Gananoque in fall.
1000 Islands Tourism generously hosted us for a weekend, having us take in fall foliage from all angles. As always, this post reflects my honest experience and opinions.
Take a Helicopter Tour Over the 1000 Islands in Fall
If there’s one way to appreciate just how spectacular the 1000 Islands are in autumn, it’s from above. I took a 20-minute helicopter ride with 1000 Islands Helicopter Tours, operated by Kouri’s Kopters, with pilot Briane (all females on board this time)and the views were absolutely incredible.
Seeing the St. Lawrence River from the air completely changes your perspective. Islands of every shape and size dot the water, some with cottages and impressive homes, others covered in trees showing off their fall colours.

And then there’s Boldt Castle. Located on Heart Island in American waters, Boldt Castle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the 1000 Islands. Seeing it from the air was a definite highlight of our flight.
Fall adds another dimension to an already spectacular landscape. The combination of colourful trees, blue water, rocky shorelines, and little islands stretching into the distance makes this one of the most memorable ways to experience Eastern Ontario in autumn. If you’ve ever considered a helicopter tour, I’d argue the 1000 Islands in fall is a fantastic place to do it.

🍁 The 1000 Islands Have My Heart!
I’ve been exploring the 1000 Islands since I was a kid, and years later, I brought my own children back for some adventures! Think kayaking, hiking, helicopter rides and boat cruises. Turns out, this part of Ontario is just as much fun with kids in tow.

Experience Come From Away at the 1000 Islands Playhouse
I’ve been to Newfoundland, I’ve spent time in Gander, and my mother’s family comes from the province. So seeing Come From Away at the 1000 Islands Playhouse was always going to be personal. But I wasn’t quite prepared for how emotional it would be.
For anyone unfamiliar with the story, Come From Away is based on the events of September 11, 2001, when 38 planes carrying thousands of passengers were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, after American airspace closed. What followed was an extraordinary display of kindness and hospitality as the people of Gander and surrounding communities opened their homes and hearts to complete strangers. This is where it really hit home for me.

Just this summer, I travelled through Central Newfoundland, spent time in Gander, and visited the North Atlantic Aviation Museum (you can read about our Central Newfoundland Adventures here). One exhibit tells the story of Operation Yellow Ribbon and the thousands of stranded passengers who unexpectedly found themselves in this small Newfoundland community.
I stood there learning more about what happened, surrounded by the history of a place that already felt personally meaningful because of my family’s roots. And now, months later, I was sitting in a theatre in Gananoque watching those events brought to life onstage. It was incredibly moving.
Newfoundland hospitality is hard to explain until you’ve experienced it. The warmth, the humour, the willingness to help someone simply because they need helping. Come From Away captures that spirit beautifully. The production at the 1000 Islands Playhouse was amazing, and the story felt even more powerful because I’d so recently visited the place where it happened. The cast gelled so well together, seamlessly slipping in and out of roles to tell the story.
If you have the opportunity to see this production, go. And even if Come From Away isn’t playing during your visit, I’d absolutely recommend checking what’s on at the 1000 Islands Playhouse. Live theatre is a good addition to an autumn getaway, especially after a day outdoors exploring.

Take a Three-Hour 1000 Islands Cruise with City Cruises
Seeing the islands from a helicopter is one thing. Cruising between them is an entirely different experience. I joined City Cruises Gananoque for its three-hour 1000 Islands sightseeing cruise, which travels through both Canadian and American waters along the St. Lawrence River. And in the fall? What a view.
The cruise offers a chance to slow down and appreciate the landscape, passing islands dotted with cottages, impressive waterfront properties and trees changing into their autumn colours. One of the things I love about exploring the 1000 Islands is the variety. Some islands are barely large enough for a single building, while others have sprawling estates and elaborate architecture. Some have shipwrecks in the waters right beside them.

It’s also fascinating to see how the international border winds through this region. The three-hour cruise gives you plenty of time to take in the scenery, enjoy the fresh air, and see a part of Ontario that looks completely different from the water.
After seeing Boldt Castle from the helicopter, it was wonderful to experience the islands from river level, too. If you’re visiting Gananoque in the fall, a sightseeing cruise is a fantastic way to enjoy the changing colours without lacing up your hiking boots.
Travel tip: Boat tours run on seasonal schedules, so check sailing dates and availability before you plan your autumn getaway.
Spend an Afternoon Exploring Downtown Gananoque
As much as I loved seeing the 1000 Islands from the sky and the water, I also really enjoyed simply wandering around downtown Gananoque. It’s such a pretty town. Historic buildings, independent shops, art galleries, inviting cafés, and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the atmosphere.
I popped into Beggars Banquet Books, browsed some local art galleries, and stopped at Panache and the next morning at Pistachio Café for coffee and treats. Because let’s be serious. A good road trip requires coffee.
Gananoque’s Town Hall is another beautiful building worth stopping to admire, and I loved wandering along the river and waterfront. What I particularly enjoyed was that the town felt like somewhere you could happily spend an afternoon without having a strict itinerary. Wander into a shop. Grab another coffee. Check out some local art. Walk down to the water. Sometimes those unplanned hours end up being some of the best parts of a trip.

Catch a Sunset at Muskie Jake’s
After a day exploring Gananoque and the 1000 Islands, I finished things off with a pint, food and a sunset from Muskie Jake’s. And what a way to end the day. There’s something about being beside the St. Lawrence River as the sun goes down that makes you want to stay just a little longer. After seeing the islands from above and travelling through them by boat, it felt like the perfect way to wrap up my time in Gananoque.
When Is the Best Time to Visit the 1000 Islands in Fall?
If you’re looking for the best things to do in Gananoque in fall, timing your visit can make all the difference, especially if you want to see the spectacular autumn colours throughout the 1000 Islands.
Generally, late September through mid-October is one of the best times to visit Gananoque and the 1000 Islands, with fall foliage often peaking in early to mid-October. Of course, Mother Nature doesn’t follow a calendar as we do, and peak fall colours can vary from year to year depending on temperatures, rainfall and weather conditions.
What makes the 1000 Islands in autumn so spectacular is the contrast between the brilliant reds, oranges and yellows of the changing leaves, the rocky islands and the blue waters of the St. Lawrence River. It’s one of Ontario’s most beautiful destinations for fall colours, whether you’re exploring by helicopter, taking a scenic boat cruise or enjoying the waterfront in downtown Gananoque.
And the best part? Beyond the scenery, there are plenty of things to do in Gananoque in fall, making it an ideal destination for an Ontario autumn road trip or weekend getaway.

Visiting the 1000 Islands in September
September is a wonderful time to explore Gananoque and the 1000 Islands, especially if you want to enjoy warmer weather before autumn really sets in.
The trees typically begin changing colour toward the end of the month, and many seasonal attractions, including sightseeing cruises and helicopter tours, are still operating. It’s a great time for waterfront walks, exploring downtown Gananoque and enjoying the region’s outdoor attractions.
Visiting the 1000 Islands in October
If fall colours are your priority, I recommend October. Early to mid-October typically offers some of the best opportunities to see the islands covered in shades of red, orange and yellow.
Imagine looking down from a helicopter at hundreds of little islands surrounded by blue water, each one showing off its autumn colours. Or cruising along the St. Lawrence River with colourful shorelines stretching out in every direction. It’s a pretty spectacular way to experience fall in Ontario.
October is also a wonderful time to explore downtown Gananoque, stop into local cafés and shops, or catch a performance at the Thousand Islands Playhouse. Just remember that temperatures can drop quickly, particularly when you’re out on the water. Bring layers, a warm jacket and something windproof if you’re planning a boat cruise.

Visiting the 1000 Islands in November
By November, most of the brilliant fall foliage has usually disappeared, but Gananoque still has its charms. The waterfront is quieter, the town takes on a slower pace, and you can still enjoy local shops, cafés and scenic walks.
However, many seasonal tourism experiences begin winding down in October, so don’t assume sightseeing cruises and other outdoor attractions will be operating. If you’re planning a November visit, check attraction schedules before heading out.
Tips for Planning Your Trip: Things to Do in Gananoque in Fall
If you’re researching things to do in Gananoque in fall, a little advance planning will help you make the most of your visit, especially as seasonal attractions begin winding down.
- Watch the fall colour reports. Ontario Parks and regional tourism websites can help you monitor changing foliage conditions so you can time your visit for those spectacular autumn colours.
- Book popular experiences in advance. Some of the best things to do in Gananoque in fall include helicopter tours over the 1000 Islands, scenic boat cruises and live theatre at the Thousand Islands Playhouse. These experiences can fill up, particularly on weekends.
- Check seasonal operating dates. Some cruises and attractions close or reduce their schedules as autumn progresses. When I visited, City Cruises ran just one sightseeing cruise per day, so you had little flexibility if you missed it!
- Dress for the weather. It can feel considerably cooler on the St. Lawrence River than downtown Gananoque. Bring layers and a windproof jacket, especially if you’re heading out on the water.
- Leave time to explore downtown. Beyond the major attractions, some of my favourite things to do in Gananoque in fall involved simply wandering the waterfront, browsing independent bookshops and art galleries, and stopping for coffee and treats.
My recommendation? Plan your 1000 Islands fall getaway for the first two weeks of October if you want to see autumn colours. You’ll have a good chance of catching the foliage near its peak while still enjoying many of the region’s seasonal experiences.
With so many things to do in Gananoque in fall, I’d recommend staying at least one night rather than squeezing everything into a day trip. Between the spectacular scenery, outdoor adventures, charming downtown and waterfront theatre, there’s more than enough to fill an autumn weekend.

Where To Stay In Gananoque?
While Gananoque has a few hotels and motels, I highly recommend the Best Western Plus 1000 Islands Inn and Suites. I was upgraded to a legit suite, and they spoiled me. A Jacuzzi tub in my room, just for me to soak in before bed while watching TV? Yes please!
Also, breakfast is included, and they have a coffee station in the lobby. It’s super close to the 401, and it doesn’t take long to drive to downtown from the Best Western. For your road trip to the 1000 Islands, I would give this hotel some serious consideration.

If this option isn’t your speed or is all booked up, there are definitely other places to look in the area, here:
Is Gananoque Worth Visiting in the Fall?
Absolutely, Gananoque is worth visiting in the fall. If you think of the 1000 Islands as strictly a summer destination, I’d encourage you to reconsider. Fall brings beautiful scenery, chances to explore the region from the air and water, a charming downtown, and live theatre that can turn an ordinary weekend getaway in Gananoque into something memorable.
What I particularly loved about this trip was the variety.
One moment I was looking down at Boldt Castle from a helicopter. Another, I was cruising along the St. Lawrence River surrounded by fall colours. Later, I was browsing books and art galleries before settling into a theatre seat for one of the most emotional performances I’ve seen.
And that’s what makes Gananoque such a great autumn destination.
You don’t have to choose between outdoor adventure, culture and a relaxing small-town escape.
You can have all three.
So if you’re looking for somewhere different to explore in Ontario this fall, put Gananoque and the 1000 Islands on your list.
